About this gallery
Opinion: are AI-generated images “art” and am I an “artist?”
Despite all of my AI-generated images here, I have mixed feelings.
I love using AI, sometimes, for featured post images when I just don’t have an appropriate image in my photo collection, can’t make one, and want something I cannot create in tools like Canva.
I also think AI is great for generating character images if you like to write fiction and can’t or don’t want to draw your characters but need a visual representation.
My daughter 1 would like me to make an RPG campaign, and due to my affinity for WordPress am using that as a tool to get this together — if I ever really get around to it. I think that AI image generation is a fun tool for creating monster and character images and “illustrating” my little website. I’ll likely use the children’s picture book model for that as it fits the type of campaign she’d like for me to make, which involves small animals like mice, rats, moles, etc.
But are AI-generated images “art”?
My spouse, playing devil’s advocate, asked me “well, is it something that was created based on your imagination?” Well, yes, it was. But I feel like being an “artist” presupposes some level of skill. I do not call myself an artist because I stuck some text into a box. Even if I go to the length of heavily editing that piece. I was at a coffee shop and went to look at the wall art, and saw it was by an “AI artist.” My eyes started to roll. Just a bit.
I also have some misgivings 2 about how the AI models are trained on existing art. True, human artists have been influenced by what went before but…this is different.
About the images in this AI gallery
As I am using AI to generate images for various purposes from fun to character creation to website images, I felt like I didn’t want these “creations” to just sit around, so I’m uploading them to this searchable gallery.
Most of the images get created at about 1024px, so they’re not very large, but it will say the size in the lightbox. If you really want a larger version of the image here, contact me and I may be able to upsize it (for a charge as it takes time) if I still have that item in my account at the site where I generated it. I have other tools available that I can try to use to upsize an image. Results may vary.
Additionally, most of the images are created in one of the many models available in OpenArt. I try to list the model and prompt used in the description, which you’ll find in the lightbox.
Some of the images may have been generated in Dall-E or other tools.
I also sometimes use the AI tools in Adobe Illustrator to create logo-type or other images. If I do so, I will state that here.
Most of the images you’ll find are PNG images. Some will be jpeg. If an image is an SVG, I’ll say that.
